Cakes by Combs

The short story: She never showed up with the cake. Didn't call to say she wasn't going to make it for some disaster or another. Just plain ol' didn't show up.The long story: We booked Cakes by Combs upon recommendation from one of her previous brides. We met with Sam at her home bakery for our first tasting the Monday after Thanksgiving and settled on 2 of our three flavors for our cupcakes: white cake with raspberry filling, and chocolate cake with cappuccino mousse filling. My husband, whose favorite cake is carrot cake, wasn't as much a fan of hers, so she offered to prepare a second tasting for us the next time we were in town so we could finalize our third flavor, which would also be our cutting cake. On our second trip, she made us a "to-go" box with three HUGE cakes to try, including the third flavor we selected: lemon cake with blueberry filling. We decided to top the lemon and chocolate cakes with her whipped frosting and the white cake with vanilla buttercream, and each cupcake was to have a fondant coin on top with our initial. Her prices were INCREDIBLY reasonable and the cakes, fillings, and icings were ALL delicious. We were so excited to have a Cakes by Combs cake at our wedding: she even waived the delivery fee because she lived so close to the reception venue. We were incredibly satisfied with our experience leading up to the wedding.Then she didn't show up.That's right. My amazing cupcake buffet and cutting cake for our cake topper (which is the FIRST thing I bought after we got engaged, by the way) was not where it was suppose to be. And we couldn't get a hold of her on the day of the wedding, either: the number was disconnected. Fortunately our reception venue (Fiorella's Jack Stack) came to the rescue and managed to provide cake to all our guests.Sam sent us a refund immediately.But I can't in good conscience recommend her to any brides because while her cake was delicious and she's incredibly sweet herself, the fact is, she didn't provide the service she had been contracted to do.

Our cakes turned out absolutely beautiful! We had 4 tiers for the regular cake and then a groom's cake in the shape of an arrowhead. People were raving about how great the cake was and a lot of them went up for seconds so they could try a different flavor. The price was VERY reasonable and the cake was delicious!

Samantha was awesome. The cake was exactly what I asked for and the powercat grooms cake was great! I didn't actually get to try the cake (besides the one bite at the cake cutting) because of all the running around at the reception but I received a lot of compliments on it. She has so many variety of flavors and fillings, which are all wonderful. Her cakes are beautiful and very well priced.

A++++++++++++ Sam Combs is simply amazing!!! We received so many compliments on our wedding cake from not only an artistic perspective, but also the amazing flavor and moistness of the cake!!! We went with the white cake and white butter cream with a slight hint of almond and a peanut butter cake with chocolate ganache and Sam's peanut butter with chocolate ganache filling was such a hit, we hardly had any to try for ourselves! (Luckily, our cake server saved us a piece.) Sam made the design process of the cake completely enjoyable and her artistic ability is truly a wonderful talent. Not only was the cake wonderful, she was at the venue on time and we hardly got to see her, she was in and out so quickly! It is so hard to believe that with all that she provided, she really is the MOST affordable of all the other cake vendors. We will most certainly use her again in the future for any and all other cake needs...she truly is the BEST of KC...

Sam was great! I was very excited about my cake, and our grooms cake. When I met with her, she designed something based off our Save The Dates. I loved that it was a custom design, and thought the design she came up with was wonderful! She seemed excited about working with us, and I could tell she loves what she does. I even had her do a birthday cake a few months before the wedding, and I was almost more excited about the cake than the actual birthday. The design was perfect and professional looking, and we had soooo many great comments about how the cake tasted. Our wedding cake was beautiful, it was exactly what her drawing showed. And the taste was awesome! I made sure to have a piece of cake at the reception because I knew it would taste really good. I will continue to use her for any future event. And her pricing was the best I found. By far!!!

Samantha was a pleasure to work with...she had samples, examples, and even drew up "our" wedding cake with the actual costs on the spot. Samantha's prices are really reasonable and she makes the whole experience stress free. But more importantly, her cake is moist and her buttercream icing is the "real deal." Lots of compliments from our guests. She made the buttercream icing look like fondant (love the look not the taste) with icing pearls to mirror my dress and designed our cake with our flowers upon delivery! I would recommend Cakes by Combs to any bride in the KC area.

Awesome tasty cupcakes and looked very nice

Unfortunately, I did not get to try more than just a bite of my cake. I heard great things about Sam's cake from other brides, and I trust that it was all wonderful. I didn't hear any feedback from guests, so I can't say one way or the other. I do have to say that I was quite disappointed with the design on my cake. It looked of a novice design and technique. The design on the cake looked like piping. There were also a few knicks in the icing of the cake, which was evident in my pictures. Meeting with Sam and getting email responses was easy. I would recommend Cakes By Combs to others; however, I would suggest being specific with design and reviewing ideas clearly.

Samantha made an awesome wedding cake and two sheet cakes with 6 different flavors. My guests loved it!

This is a baker you cannot go wrong with. Most accommodating from beginning to end. Able to see my vision, offered suggestions and every thing was just as I wanted it, from the look to the taste. Would definitely use again, over and over.

Sam makes the best cake!! We had 3 flavors and I still don't know which one was my favorite! Our cake was exactly what we wanted, looked great, and tasted amazing! Everyone raved about it and I can't wait until I have another occasion to get a Sam Combs cake!

As a wedding photographer I have had a ton of wedding cake and I have to say Samantha's cake was the best I have ever had!! It was so moist and yummy. Sam was very easy to work with, she was flexiable and had creative ideas. She did not push her ideas on us, but worked with ideas we had and made them into a beautiful cake. Her grooms great was awesome as well. We just downloaded a picture of a Razorback Hog, and she created it to a tee! Everyone at the wedding raved about the look and the taste of the cake. Thank you, Sam!

Samantha was wonderful to work with!! She customized the wedding cake (cupcakes with a topper, at our request) exactly as we requested with multiple flavors. She also used a family recipe for one of the flavors at no extra charge. The cake was delicious!!! Samantha also took a minor glitch in stride and worked with the florist to get into the locked reception venue. And to top it all off, her rates were very reasonable - if I could give her more than 5 stars for value I would!!!
